There’s a range of blockchain and crypto trends, and NFTs are one of the most recent. They’ve exploded in popularity in recent years, but many people still don’t know much about them.

In this guide, we’ll take a look at what NFTs are, as well as some of the most expensive NFTs in the world.

What Are NFTs?

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are digital assets that can people can trade using blockchain technology. Many people have taken part in buying and selling NFTs, and some have made incredible profits doing so.

NFTs come in all different formats, such as abstract art, character designs, and even digital versions of physical products such as this Digital Daytona Rolex. Individuals can buy and sell them through various NFT marketplaces online.

The World’s Most Expensive NFTs

The value of NFTs varies greatly. These are the ones that have had the highest sales to date.

1. The Merge – $91,800,000

This is the highest-selling NFT of all time, overtaking the second-place NFT on this list near the end of 2021. It was created by an artist known as Pak, and it sold in a slightly different fashion from most NFTs.

Instead of selling as a single item, it was split down into 312,686 coins. These were bought by a total of 29,983 people, so the NFT cost was split between all of these rather than just one individual.

2. Every Day: The First Five Thousand Days – $69,346,250

This piece by Beeple is the second-highest-selling NFT of all time and the highest sale to a single person. Beeple created one piece of art a day for 5,000 days and combined them to create this NFT. It was bought by Vignesh Sundaresan in March 2021.

3. Clock – $52,740,000

Pak created this piece alongside Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder. It’s a functional clock that’s counting how long Assange has been in London’s Belmarsh Prison. The purpose of this NFT was to raise funds for Assange’s legal defense.

10,000 members of AssangeDAO purchased split shares of this NFT, and all proceeds went to the Holland Foundation to help Assange.

4. Human One – $28,985,000

Another piece by Beeple, this one is a life-sized 3D NFT of a man in a spacesuit. It’s an animated NFT, and the spacesuit changes color as the artist chooses. It currently only changes between bronze and silver, but Beeple has said he will continue to update it so that it crosses time.

5. Cryptopunk #5822 – $23,700,000

There are several NFT collections containing thousands of individual NFTs. One of the most popular is Cryptopunks, and among those, #5822 is the highest-selling ever. It’s one of just 9 in the whole collection that has the “alien” trait and sold for more than $23 million in early 2022.
