Many of the risk factors for alcohol dependency are similar to those of overall drug use disorders (including illicit drug disorders). Further discussion on these risk factors can be found on our topic page on drug use. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), in its Global Burden of Disease study, provides estimates of the number of deaths attributed to the range of risk factors.5 In the visualization, we see the number of deaths per year attributed to each risk factor. This chart is shown for the global total but can be explored for any country or region using the “Change country or region” toggle.

The only other metropolitan area to spend as much was Minneapolis, although other Midwestern urban areas also had strong drinking cultures. Residents of Cleveland and St. Louis also spent more than 1 percent of their average income on alcohol. Their prominence is driven by consumers’ continual search for new and exciting products. “When we ask RTD consumers what factors influence their beverage alcohol purchase decision, the #1 response we hear is ‘flavor’,” says Rand.

People Reveal Their Average Weekly Spend On Alcohol

  1. The charts show global consumption of beer, first in terms of beer as a share of total alcohol consumption, and then the estimated average consumption per person.
  2. While trends generally indicate an increased interest and purchasing of premium-priced alcoholic beverages, there is evidence that younger consumers are particularly interested in trading up.
  3. When asked about marijuana consumption, 52% of participants aged 18-to-34-years responded that marijuana was “not too harmful/not at all harmful.”
  4. Residents of Cleveland and St. Louis also spent more than 1 percent of their average income on alcohol.
  5. Rehab can cost tens of thousands of dollars and drain not just your bank account but also those who care most about you financially, mentally, and emotionally.
  6. This data is based on estimates of prevalence and treatment published by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Of course, I can’t be representative of every single person in my age bracket. So, I took to asking some peers — all of whom are in their 20s and 30s, and all of whose names I’ve changed — about theiraverage weekly spend on alcohol. Keep in mind almost all of these people live in urban areas, so it’s still not a completely accurate snapshot (though really, what is?), but I think their answers provide some interesting insight into how we approach this particular area of spending.

Up-and-coming wine regions

Othe NielsenIQ data for the 52-week period ending October 2, 2021, showed that sales for tequila-based RTDs grew 138%, rum-based grew 132%, and vodka-based grew 110%. A century ago, some countries had much higher levels of alcohol consumption. In France in the 1920s, the average was 22.1 liters of pure alcohol what is liquid marijuana drink per person per year. This equals 184 one-liter wine bottles per person per year.2 Note that in contrast to the modern statistics that are expressed in alcohol consumption per person older than 15 years, this includes children as well – the average alcohol consumption per adult was, therefore, even higher.

U.S. consumer expenditure on alcoholic beverages 2022, by category

When asked about marijuana consumption, 52% of participants aged 18-to-34-years responded that marijuana was “not too harmful/not at all harmful.” N.C. Solutions reported in January 2024 that, on average, consumers were “having three drinks per week, down from four per week in 2023.”  Gallup also reported that alcoholic beverage drinkers consumed “on average…four drinks in the past week,” in July 2023. The new Zenith report shows that alcohol industry giants are now readying massive spending on alcohol marketing in 2021. Alcohol advertising spending will still be 8% below the 2019 level by the end of 2021, at US$ 7.0bn.

Alcoholic Beverage Consumption Statistics and Trends 2023

The need to drive awareness and traffic to e-commerce channels meant the alcohol industry had to expand their online presence rapidly in 2020. Breweries, distilleries, bars, and restaurants shifted rapidly to direct-to-consumer how long does a salvia trip last shipping and takeaway services even for alcohol. This shift is facilitated by the rise of and investment in e-commerce and by an onslaught of alcohol advertising on digital media, particularly social media.

Hasegawa, the following are examples of beer and food pairings based on the beer’s flavor profile. In an article published by WGSN, we should begin to see Chinese baijiu, a white spirit, “and the world’s most-consumed spirit, outselling whisky, vodka, gin, rum, and tequila combined,” become more prevalent. Whilst the World Health Organization (WHO) and most national guidelines typically quantify one unit of alcohol as equal to 10 grams of pure alcohol, the metric used as a ‘standard measure’ can vary across countries. The total estimated number of deaths by country from 1990 to 2019 is found here.

U.S. consumer demand for beer continues to shift to “premium options and new and exciting alternatives” when selecting the beverage to consume off-premise. Such offerings that have garnered consumer attention include craft beers (annual production of fewer than 6 million barrels) and imported and domestic super-premium beers (which were categorized in 2012 as priced at $22 and higher per case). In the chart, we see data across some countries on the share of people with an alcohol use disorder who received treatment. This data is based on estimates of prevalence and treatment published by the World Health Organization (WHO). The chart shows direct death rates (not including suicide deaths) from alcohol use disorders across the world.

The non/low alcohol beer segment did align with the trends shown in the other categories with forecasts to grow with a compounded annual growth rate volume of +23.6% from 2021 to 2025. In fact, according to one source quoted in the article, rose, white, and sparkling wines are outpacing red wines. BevAlc Insights also suggests that “sparkling rose wines will experience above average growth in 2022.” While these wines only account for a small share, 2.5% of the wine category, compared to 2020, sparkling rose “was up nearly 50 percent year-over-year in 2021.” NielsenIQ researchers did find that it was not an “all or nothing” decision regarding non-alcoholic purchases, but rather 78% of those who purchased non-alcoholic beverages also purchased beer, wine, and spirits with an alcoholic beverage content. Still, other data indicated that in 2023, 52% of consumers aged 18 to 34 felt that “drinking in moderation is bad for your health,” an increase from 34% reported in 2018 for this age group. Fifteen percent of this age group indicated that alcohol was “not too harmful/not at all harmful” to those who consume it.

The map shows DALYs per 100,000 people, which result from alcohol use disorders. In the chart, we see estimates of the alcohol-attributable fraction (AAF), which is the proportion of deaths that are caused or exacerbated by alcohol (i.e., that proportion that would disappear if alcohol does alcohol bother gallbladder consumption was removed). We see that the proportion of deaths attributed to alcohol consumption is lower in North Africa and the Middle East and much higher in Eastern Europe. In a related chart, you can see the share who drink alcohol by gender and age group in the UK.
